A Korean Winter Vacation, Day 5 – Galbi, Fortresses and Castles.

image

A trip to Korea cannot be complete without having some delicious galbi (marinated short ribs). And, apparently, Suwon, a city about an hour outside of Seoul, is famous for it! Off on the KTX train we went…

Off the train station, my friend Matt (who used to live in this city many moons ago) directed us towards the fortress that surrounds the city: Hawseong Fortress, a UNESCO venue.

We circled around South Gate, Paldamun, in the middle of the city to situate ourselves into some touring.

A Korean Winter Vacation, Day 4 – Culture Hopping.

Oh my hell it has been a long time since a post. I blame it on about two months of play and travel, but I’m back! Let’s get back to Korea

image

Errr, let me see if I can remember…

My friend Matt was working, so my mom and I decided to take in the sights, a bit of culture-hopping if you will. First up, the Changdeokgung Palace near the Anguk Station!

Sweet Charity! What Did You Say?

Sweet CharityHey! Check out the Pioneer Theatre blog for my latest entry on Sweet Charity, the closing musical of the 2013-2014 season at Pioneer.

And enter to win tickets to see the very cute, whimsical comedy with a lil’ Bob Fosse dancing! I think the chances are pretty good!

Walk Through Walls! Do It.

Katie Herzig

So, let me take a break from my Korea trip (erm, that happened like 4 months ago) and give props to Katie Herzig. See a video from tonight’s concert!

Katie Herzig at the Urban Lounge, SLC

And also see the cool music video for this song, one of my favorites:

Nonchalant, kooky, awesome – I think those are the words I’d use to describe her. All in a very positive complimentary manner, of course.

And whoa… I just realized she has really good teeth! Zoom camera, ya’ know… it’s wondrous.

Okay, it’s past my bedtime, but I really just wanted to show off her stuff and say, go check her out! She’s on tour!!

Wahoo!!

P.S.: Are you wondering how you know her? She’s been featured in a few commercials and movie trailers. Read her wiki for more info. Now, are you wondering why I know her? Why, Missy Higgins, of course! Some sort of article, some sort of collaboration, that sort of thing that tied her with Missy. Of course. You all know how much I love Missy Higgins, eh?

A Korean Winter Vacation, Day 3 – Army Life Followed by Shopping

The very first thing I booked was our DMZ tour (technically my cousin booked our flights, so yep, very first thing!). Reading through multiple forums on TripAdvisor, I figured it was best to secure our spots on this very popular excursion.

I chose the USO/Koridoor tour from the rave reviews. I also wanted the US military experience. So, was it worth the $80 per person?

A Winter in Korea, Day 2 – Christmas Day Trip to Pyeongchang

It was our second full day in Korea and Matt, my friend and host, had the day off from work. I know that our next holy holiday is almost upon as I write this in April but it happened on Christmas, but you already know my excuses if you’ve been following along: school, work.

Well, anyway, in all my research for this trip, I really wanted to do one thing: ice fishing! And since there was only one ice fishing festival happening while we were there, Pyeongchang Trout Festival it was.

Oh, it’s also home to our next winter Olympic Games! Awkwardly enough, I had mistaken Sochi to be in Korea for the longest time until only a few days after they begun. Well, Sochi sounds Korean in my defense…

Moving on… so, we took the bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Jinbu. I couldn’t really find much in English, but ask a helpful, friendly employee to get you in the right place. We found that may speak English but may not always respond in English. There are several buses a day that depart to Jinbu, which is about a 7 minute walk to the festival location along the stream. I want to say the bus ticket was under $20 per person, maybe even under $15.

A Korean Winter Vacation, Day 1 – Seoul

Taiwan, Taiwan, Taiwan… I’ve been there many times over the years of my life. So, I decided I needed a getaway trip while I was on the other side of the country. What better place to go then a place with friends? Hello, freezing-ass cold Korea!

image

Well, after we got in, we took the bus and headed up to my friend Matt’s house. Then, got some dinner!

The next day, we started off on our own….

First Meal in Seoul: Bibimbap – Food Porn Quicky

First day in Seoul? Nothing like some delicious $6 dolsot bibimbap! After we loaded up our luggage at the top of a very steep hill, we came back down for some much desired dinner.

Matt brought us to a fantastic place in Itaewon behind the main street – a local Korean joint. Probably one of the best (and cheapest) meals we had there. It also had my favorite banchan! Tiny dried sweetened stir-fried anchovies (myeollchi-bokkeum; 멸치볶음), bean sprouts, seaweed, kimchi (of course), and some others. All served with our meal and a tofu soup! YUM. My mouth is watering…

Taiwanese Eats: Hsinchu Cheng Huang Temple Night Market

If you’ve heard anything about Taiwan, it’s probably something or other about it’s food. Let’s admit it… Taipei 101 was soon left in the dust as the world’s tallest building almost as soon as it became known. But, there is a ton of food in this small country. I’m going to start with Hsinchu’s Cheng Huang (City God) Temple Night Market – 城隍廟夜市!

Taiwanese Breakfast at Fu Hang Dou Jiang – A Must in Taipei!

Aiyaiyai – it has been several months since I’ve posted. I apologize. I’m going to blame the usual life-gets-busy excuses: travel, school, work, laziness, etc. But here’s a taste of one of those excuses!

Over the winter holidays, I spent a little over 3 weeks in Taiwan and Korea, mostly Taiwan for family stuff…. and eating.

Huashan Market – home of Fu Hang Dou Jiang 阜杭豆漿. Have you ever heard of this place? Neither have I. Have you ever been to this place? Neither had I until my most recent trip to Taiwan!! Damn, it is delicious.
